I D:Ream of Cox

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Your boyish charms are more than temperate.

My favourite Physics Brian after May,

I wonder what we would do on a date.

I’d tell you how your smile it always shines,

You’d tell me that the Universe had dimmed;

I’d show how you how my self-doubting declines,

You’d show me your hypothesis, untrimmed;

I’d ask you if our love would ever fade,

You’d ask me how much dark matter was ow’st;

I’d ponder how you’d turned me from the shade,

You’d ponder how with speed time it does grow’st.

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,

I know that in my D:Ream there will be thee.

This is a poem that I wrote and performed for the Word War 2 Heat 7 Poetry Slam, run by the lovely folk at Evidently. The poem is of course a bit of a love note to the wonderful Professor Brian Cox, science communicator extraordinaire!

(This was my first ever Poetry Slam, and rather surprisingly I ended up winning the heat, and am now looking forward to the final in December!)

An audio version of this poem can be heard here.
